Govt aims for fish consumption of 35 kilograms per capita

The Ministry of Maritime and Fisheries aims to increase the consumption of fish among Indonesians to 35 kilograms per capita this year and 40 kilograms per capita by 2014. Sharif Cicip Sutardjo, Minister of Maritime and Fisheries, said that the increase will boost the industrialization of the sector. Cicip said that the industrialization of the industry will not be successful if market access to fishery products in the global and domestic level remains low.

Four foreign sailors stranded in Pangkep, evacuated to Makassar

A Makassar Search and Rescue (SAR) team evacuated on Monday four foreign sailors, who were stranded on Makassar Strait, around Kapoposang island, Pangkep regency, in Makassar, South Sulawesi. The sailors were identified as Andrew Jennings, 37, and David Hodgkinson, 32—both from the UK, and Lisa Chamberlain, 21, and Robert Azopedis, 51, from Australia.

Gov't encourages prawn cultivation at paddy fields

Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fishery is encouraging cultivation of prawn at irrigated lands. Slamet Subiakto, Director General of Aquaculture at the Ministry, said the program aims to boost prawn production as well as paddy field productivity. For the program, Slamet said, it requires water resistant rice plants. Therefore, Center for Freshwater Aquaculture Development at the Ministry uses rice plant variety of Inparit 13.

South Sulawesi police haul in illegal fishermen

The South Sulawesi Police have arrested fishermen and seized four boats for alleged illegal fishing in Pangkajene and Islands regency waters, South Sulawesi. “We seized the four boats because [fishermen] were found to be fishing illegally, using explosives, and to be trading in protected species,” said police director for maritime affairs Sr. Comr. Hari Sanyoto on Wednesday in Makassar. He said the police arrested four fishermen on Monday, along with the boats.

Gov't targets 8% growth of fish production value

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries targets Rp 70.96 trillion (US$ 7.73 billion) fish production value this year, or up eight percent year-on-year (YOY) from Rp 65.3 trillion. Heriyanto Marwoto, Director General of Fishing at the Ministry, said the production growth is done to maintain the fish quality from the fishing boats to the ports.

Fish feed production target set at 1.3 million tons

The production of fish and shrimp feeds is projected to increase 12 percent this year to 1.3 million tons compared to one million tons last year. Denny Indrajaja, Head of Animal Feed Entrepreneurs Association of Aqua Feed Division, said high production will be affected by the production of fish and shrimps this year. Of the projection, 900 thousand tons will come from fish feed production and 400 thousand tons from shrimp feed production.
