Mangroves in S. Sulawesi face uncertain future

South Sulawesi is facing massive mangrove forest destruction as over the past 30 years deforestation and pollution have taken their toll and damaged almost 90 percent of the total original areas. The Mangrove Action Project (MAP) Indonesia recorded that the damage had reached 89 percent, citing that the worst damage took place in the 1980s.

Fighting Illegal Fishing in Sulawesi

The South Sulawesi Marine and Fisheries Board is aiming to curb the illegal fihing rate by 15 percent this year.“We want to achieve this target, said the board law enforcement and management director in Makassar on Tuesday, March 5. So far, the measures taken to curb illegal fishing have only involved a counseling program for fishermen, but the effort is considered ineffective.

Contribution from fishery and marine sectors to the national economy is still low, at only 7.76 percent as of the third quarter of 2012. The Indonesian Chamber of Trade and Industry (Kadin) said that serious efforts are needed to attract investors to invest in maritime, marine and fishery sectors.Yugi Prayanto, Deputy Chairman for Fishery and Marine at Kadin, explained that in terms of business and economy, contribution from Indonesia’s fishery industry is still low. In 2011, Indonesia’s fish exports only reached US$ 3.34 billion with a total water area of 5.88 million square kilometers.
