Indonesia's govt seeking release of fishermen detained by Timor Leste

The Indonesian government is seeking the release of six traditional fishermen from South Sulawesi caught by Timor Leste police some time ago. "We will not stay idle with regard to the arrest of our fishermen by police in the neighboring country," Marine Resources and Fisheries Minister Sharif C Sutardjo said here on Saturday. He said efforts would be made to open communication with the Timor Leste government.

Price of fish raw materials jumps due to bad weather

The price of fish as raw materials for processing industries surged month-on-month due to supply shortage. E.F. Hamidy, Chairman of Indonesian Boiled Fish Entrepreneurs Association (Asosiasi Pengusaha Pindang Ikan Indonesia), said this will cause selling price to the consumers to increase.The Association’s members in all provinces have raw materials stock shortage and they must buy them at a higher price.

Sea of food options in ocean, but will Indonesians bite?

Indonesia’s vast maritime territory is potentially home to more than half a million marine species, but a global census shows that only a negligible proportion of this valuable food source is being exploited. “According to the Census of Marine Life, there are nearly a million marine biota in the sea worldwide, but of these how many do we depend on for food?” said Tonny Wagey, a senior researcher at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry’s research and development agency.

Rp 1t for sea projects in eastern Indonesia

The government says it will allocate Rp 1 trillion (US$109 million) to develop sea transportation and maritime infrastructure in eastern Indonesia this year. “We will develop ship transportation facilities and ports for islands in Papua, Maluku, North Maluku and East Nusa Tenggara. The ships will connect islands in those provinces to facilitate communication and connectivity,” Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa said.

Pelindo IV needs Rp 150b to expand Soekarno-Hatta seaport

State-owned seaport operator PT Pelindo IV needs Rp 150 billion (US$ 16.3 million) to fund the expansion of the cargo dock at the Soekarno-Hatta port in Makassar, South Selawesi. Pelindo IV president director Harry Sutanto said Thursday that the dock’s expansion was aimed at reducing the queuing times for cargo ships moored at the port.

6 Indonesian fishermen to stand trial in Timor Leste

Six Indonesian fishermen will stand trial in a Timor Leste court for breaching the neighboring country’s maritime territory. The six fishermen, identified as Kahar, 25, Ceta, 45, Ambo, 45, Laji, 25, Tiar, 23, and Hasran, 23, are all residents of Sinjai regency, South Sulawesi. They were on board the KM Masagena 04 vessel when they were arrested by Timor Leste Maritime Police.

Residents threaten to cut access to Pallette tourism

Hundreds of Pallette residents in Bone have threatened to shut down all access to the tourist sites in Pallette. Pallette is a conservation area, which means the residents cannot own land there even if they have lived there for generations.Bone Provincial House of Representatives (DPRD) spokesman Andi Pangerang, asked that Pallette be excluded from the protected forest area.

Shrimp production enough for industry's raw material requirement

National shrimp production is estimated to be sufficient to fulfill raw materials requirement of national shrimp processing industry. Iwan Sutanto, Head of Shrimp Club Indonesia, said the production may arrive at 400 thousand tons this year, while raw materials requirement is estimated at 297,687 tons. Farmers ask the government not to open shrimp import in order to maintain domestic shrimp price.

Fish processing industry requires 2.4 million tons of raw materials

Ministry of Maritime and Fishery Affairs estimates 2.48 million tons raw materials requirement for fish processing industry this year, a 24.62 percent increase from 1.99 million tons year-on-year (YOY). Victor Nikijluluw, Director General of Fishery Products Management and Marketing at the Ministry, said the increment is supported by additional fish processing units and the government's policy which will be focused on national fish processing industrialization.
